On January 8 at 12:39 the Jewett City and Griswold Fire Depts. were dispatched to Route 138 and Frontage Road for Propane Truck on it's side. Jewett City officers arrived to find a truck carrying 9,000 gallons of liquid propane resting on it's passenger side with no leak and one injury. Firefighters removed the patient and discovered a small amount of diesel fuel and motor oil leaking. A Hot Zone was established, evacuating the residents of three houses and the guest from the American Inn Hotel close by. The Griswold school campus, located about a mile away, was told to keep all students inside. Command requested Mutual Aid from DEP and surrounding towns for manpower, tankers and the Haz-Mat Team from Sub Base. No leaks or cracks were found in the tank so it was determined to leave the product in place. As a safety precaution numerous master streams were put into operation and Interstate 395 was shut down while tow trucks from Guy's Oil lifted the rig back onto its wheels. The situation was placed under control and all Departments cleared about seven hours later.
