5/20/08 Jewett City

Firefighters from Jewett City and Griswold Ambulance responded to this vehicle into a propane tank behind the Haven Health Care center on Preston Rd. Tuesday afternoon. First arriving companies found a SUV that had rolled down the parking lot striking a stationary tank. The driver was already out of the vehicle when the Blazer started to roll, the passenger was unable to do so. The passenger refused treatment by EMS while firefighters secured the scene setting up a perimeter and relocating one wing of the Health Care facility. Griswold Fire ET-355 was requested for a water supply if needed. Companies remained on scene for about two hours until the SUV was removed and the tank was secured. No firefighter injuries were reported.

63rd Annual Tri-State Firefighters Meet

Firefighters and family from around the region meet at the Brooklyn Fairgrounds in Brooklyn, Ct. Sunday. The 63rd Annual Tri-State Firefighters Meet was held and fire apparatus from CT, RI and MA along with DEP Units and the Connecticut State Fire Marshall's vehicle were on display to name a few. Members of the Mortlake Fire Dept. held a vehicle extrication demonstration for spectators to see, while many others ventured around the food stands and exhibit hall. It was nice to stop by and see the many vendors on hand, Boston Fire Apparel, Fireground Images and Providence Fire Videos are just some of the displays. Below are some photos that I took from the grounds, I wasn't able to stay till the end so I don't have info on the apparatus awards.

Jewett City

At 04:05 Jewett City with mutual aid from Griswold, Lisbon and the FAST from Taftville were alerted for a structure fire at 209 North Main Street. Luckily enough a passing motorist noticed the flames and smoke emitting from the house and stopped to call 911. The neighbors were evacuated, but the residence of the fire apartment were still inside. When first due companies arrived they had a two-story wood frame duplex with fire showing from the basement Alpha- Bravo corner, unsure if the residents made it out yet, the crew from ET-156 stretched a 2" attack line while the Ladder crew went in for the primary search. Firefighters searched the first and second floors to find that all occupants were accounted for with fire extending into the first floor. The first in hose line encountered high heat and zero visibility upon entry of the basement. Firefighters made a quick knockdown keeping the fire contained to the basement with minor extension into the first floor. One occupant was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and one firefighter was treated on scene for exhaustion. All companies were cleared by 06:30, the Griswold FMO is investigating.
